I booked a last minute flight over to Hong Kong and for my return, I was surprised to see that the Saver tickets were still available. Saver is the cheapest class of tickets and it wouldn’t make any financial sense to be paying for the Standard or Full fares.
I went for the miles redemption option and was charged only HKD170 (SGD30) after redeeming about 23,000 miles.
It was a short flight so I wasn’t expecting much, however this was my first time flying Business Class on Singapore Airlines so I was looking forward to see what they have to offer.
The service started before I boarded the plane. I checked-in to the airport early enough to spend a couple of hours at the SilverKris Lounge located near Gate 15 of Hong Kong International Airport.
The lounge was equipped with fast and stable wifi, and I sat inside one of these little cubicles where I enjoyed a lot of privacy. I was able to leave my belongings around unattended, even left my phone charging at the electric socket, while I went to the bathroom and also to grab some refreshments. Had a generous serving of champagne and also had my dinner at the lounge because the flight only departs at 7:55pm.
Announcements were made inside the lounge when the boarding gates are open and the boarding gate (Gate 16) was only a 2-minute walk away. It was kind of expected, because I certainly don’t think they would put the lounge near Gate 15 and make you walk to Gate 51 for boarding.
Anyway, I proceeded to board the aircraft together with the rest of the other business class passengers, most of whom I’ve already seen hanging around at the lounge earlier.
It was an old aircraft, however still maintaining business class standards. Cabin was quiet, screen was huge, seats were wide and legroom aplenty. The crew was serving drinks and snacks almost every 15 minutes. I had a hard time trying to see the bottom of my glass because it kept getting filled.
I loved the garlic bread and the scallops. Dessert was a strawberry tart that was also to my liking, however the main course of the codfish fillet was only so-so. Maybe I should have ordered something else. I noticed the passenger beside me was enjoying his steak.
I can hardly sleep comfortably during flights. The main draw for me to book my next business class ticket is probably because I want to sleep comfortably. I can give the lounge access a miss, I can bring my own in-flight entertainment and never mind the dinner service I can get better food at a restaurant when I disembark the plane, but the nap that I took on the plane was so calming and relaxing. It was a fantastic break from reality.
I just hope I don’t pamper or spoil myself too much to the extent that I don’t give economy class a chance again.
