Need to get an in-car cam soon.
I drive along Holland Road to get to work everyday, and while I have nothing against cyclists cycling on the roads, the number of reckless cyclists is just too damn high.
In slow-moving traffic every morning, I see cyclists weaving in and out of car lanes with no regard for their own personal safety. If you want to share the roads, why don’t you obey the rules just like everyone else?
It is not like I take my car out with the purpose of looking for cyclists to run down. I only want to travel from one destination to another. However if I am unfortunate enough to knock down a reckless cyclist who swerved into my path, I need all the evidence I can get to prove my innocence. Cyclists don’t even have insurance. Who pays for the damages on my vehicle if a collision occurs? A friend of mine was unfortunate enough to have a cyclist leave a big scratch on his car because the cyclist, who was riding on the extreme right lane, lost her balance. The cyclist didn’t even stop, she picked herself up and continued riding off. My friend had nothing to settle with and had to pay for the damage himself.
Is it fair? To cyclists, obviously not. They have their lives to lose.
What about motorists? Was it fair to my friend who had to pay for the scratch because the cyclist couldn’t maintain her balance? I guess he had to just consider himself unlucky enough to waste unnecessary time and money for something that he can’t claim despite paying annual insurance premiums.
It is no longer about a dedicated cycling lane, or 1.5m distance from cyclists. You can have an dedicated cycling lane but still have a sleeping lorry driver drive straight into you. How many cyclists are there in Singapore? If LTA were to really dedicate a lane for cyclists, I think the priority should be on motorcyclists. I rode a motorcycle for 3 years, mind you, I know what is it like to feel so vulnerable on the roads.
I don’t know what should the solution be. The elites in our country have yet to think of a feasible solution that benefits all, but what I know is this:
If you are not responsible for your own safety, nobody can be responsible for you.
I need an in-car cam.
